Internet Filtering in the United Arab Emirates

The Open Net Initiative (ONI) considers some of the legal implications of controlling access to Internet content through filtering. Filtering regimes have a tremendous effect on issues such as civil liberties, international jurisdictional matters, and Internet governance, there are few established mechanisms for review and reform of Internet censorship.

The Open Net Initiative, in it's recent release of the 'Internet filtering in the United Arab Emirates', highlights the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in order to maintain a reliable, efficient, and global medium for communication.

The news media in the UAE, the sole Internet service provider (ISP) Etisalat   and Internet based content providers, all face stringent legal controls on  expression and access to information.

UAE Hackers Assaulting Websites

Professional hackers are employed to deface websites

The coordinated hacking attacks against human rights content sites, which would probably be supported by the UAE regime is a great concern.

These hired goons are taking on a bigger role to invade server farms, breaking into more secure networks than ever before, mainly to deface websites.

Several sites of Western, Israeli and Asian Web sites have been defaced last year, this includes attack against 'uaeprison.com' Web server and it's networks.

Few of the sites were down for several hours to remove some malicious insertions.

The repressive regime in the UAE also supports predatory, private companies for their hacking activities.  In Phrack magazine, Dr. Crash explains that computer technology is being misused not by hackers but by governments and corporations.

A study report, OpenNet Initiative notes that UAE relies on American software (SmartFilter) to implement its filtering, and points out that UAE's system suffers from considerable over-blocking that prevents its citizens from accessing a significant amount of Internet content on a variety of topics. The OpenNet Initiative tested 8713 URLs in UAE found 1347 (15.4%) URLs of them are blocked.

  The BCCI Banking Scandal !

The chapter on BCCI banking scandal describes in detail the heinous crimes UAE did for every major terrorist service in the world.

BCCI had fully corrupt relationships with officials from countries all over the world. BCCI's criminality included fraud involving billions of dollars; money laundering in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas; support of terrorism, arms trafficking, and the sale of nuclear technologies; management of prostitution; the commission and facilitation of income tax evasion, smuggling, illegal immigration, illicit purchases of banks and real estate, and financial crimes limited only by the imagination of its officers.

Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of United Arab Emirates, the then UAE President and Emir of Abu Dhabi, owned major shares of BCCI.

The Bank of England shuts down Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), this bank expedited the heroin shipments, financed numerous militant organizations and laundered money generated by illicit drug, arms trafficking and other illegal activities, including  involvement in prostitution.  (The BCCI banking scandal).
